Why Are Pediatric Eye Exams Important?

Children often don’t realize they’re having trouble seeing because they assume everyone sees the same way they do. Even if your child passes a school vision screening, they may still have vision problems that can affect reading, learning, attention, and overall development.

School vision screenings are designed to identify obvious vision problems, but they do not evaluate the overall health of the eyes or many of the visual skills necessary for academic success.

A comprehensive pediatric eye exam allows us to detect vision problems early, when treatment is often most effective. Early diagnosis can help prevent unnecessary struggles in school and support healthy visual development.

Did you know? Up to 80% of classroom learning is visual, making healthy vision an important part of your child’s success in school.

What Happens During a Pediatric Eye Exam?

Every child’s eyes are unique, so we tailor each examination to their age, developmental stage, and individual needs. Our goal is to make the experience relaxed, educational, and even fun.

During your child’s exam, we will evaluate:

  • Visual acuity and eyeglass prescription
  • Eye alignment and coordination
  • Eye movement and tracking
  • Focusing ability
  • Depth perception
  • Color vision when appropriate
  • Overall eye health
  • Early signs of eye disease or developmental vision concerns

We also discuss any concerns you may have regarding your child’s vision, school performance, screen time, headaches, or family history of any eye conditions.

A Comfortable Experience for Kids and Parents

We understand that visiting the eye doctor can feel intimidating for some children. Our Team is committed to creating a positive experience from the moment you walk through the door. We explain each step in a child-friendly way, answer questions, and work at your child’s pace to help them feel relaxed and confident throughout the exam.

We also believe parents are an important part of the visit. We’ll review our findings, answer your questions, and provide recommendations to help support your child’s vision both at home and at school.

We look forward to partnering with your family and helping your child enjoy a lifetime of healthy vision.
